How Xfinity Communities is clearing up bulk managed Wi-Fi misconceptions and streamlining MDU retrofits without invasive construction

David Tashjian, the SVP and GM of Xfinity Communities, says he’s aligning internal messaging to reverse misconceptions around bulk managed Wi-Fi.
“I think the biggest misconception is that it’s simply a dumb pipe,” he said, speaking recently on Beyond the Cable. “It’s our new products — we just announced Xfinity Shield, which can actually monitor motion with our modems and who knows what the future has to bring as well.”
In the MDU space, Tashjian says Xfinity Communities has set up a dedicated marketing space to help communicate the message.
“We offer much more than just broadband services,” he said.
Additionally, Tashjian said the challenge of MDU retrofits is being tackled head on by his organization, with Xfinity Communities Connected Building.
With the existing wiring, Tashjian said Xfinity Communities Connected Building builds out an IoT network. To do so, he said they use the broadcast channels within their gateways.
Property-area wi-fi is also included, he said.
“And we can do that with very little invasive retrofitting,” Tashjian also added. “Very little invasive construction and retrofitting exactly what is there at a relatively affordable cost.”
