Great Plains Communications (GPC) announced Tuesday it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire the Nebraska business of Fastwyre Broadband, the regional internet provider operated by American Broadband Holding Company.

The deal covers Fastwyre’s operations in more than two dozen Nebraska communities and is presented as a bid to broaden GPC’s fiber network across the Midwest.

GPC said Fastwyre’s Nebraska customers will gain access to more service options and future network upgrades once the transaction closes, subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals.

“Our vision has always been to expand our fiber network throughout the Midwest and beyond and acquiring Fastwyre’s Nebraska business is a strategic milestone in that journey,” said GPC CEO Todd Foje in the company statement.

The release lists the affected communities, including Blair, Fremont, Wayne, Bellevue, and Winnebago among others, totaling more than two dozen towns. GPC said it will communicate proactively with customers to ensure “seamless continuity of service” and said it plans to invest in integrating and upgrading the acquired network to support both residential and business customers.

CFO Nick Wilkin emphasized GPC’s capacity to fund both the acquisition and the planned upgrades.

Wilkin also noted that more than two dozen Nebraska-based Fastwyre employees will join GPC. The company also named law firm Alston & Bird as an advisor on the transaction.

The companies said the deal remains subject to customary conditions and regulatory approvals before the transfer of operations takes effect.
