President Donald Trump has said he is immediately ending the Digital Equity Act of 2021, which was passed into law as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
The president made the proclamation on Truth Social last week, a social-media platform owned by Trump Media.
In his post, Trump labeled the law “racist” and “unconstitutional.”
“No more woke handouts based on race,” the president posted Thursday. “The Digital Equity Program is a RACIST and ILLEGAL $2.5 BILLION DOLLAR GIVEAWAY.”
Trump’s post continued.
“I am ending this IMMEDIATELY,” he wrote, “and saving Taxpayers BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!”
The bill, H.R. 1841, requires the government to set up grant programs promoting digital equity.
It also established the State Digital Equity Capacity Grant Program, which was tasked with making distributions to states based on access availability, population, and demographics.
In his social media post, the president said he made the decision after speaking with Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
He said Lutnick agreed with him that the Digital Equity Act was unconstitutional.
According to Broadband Breakfast, funding freezes for Digital Equity Act grants have not been verified at this time.
Meanwhile, it remains unclear how Trump would end the act.
