The North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT) is continuing to accept applications from eligible entities that wish to participate in a satellite grant program that will prioritize counties designated inside the Hurricane Helene federal disaster area.

The deadline for eligible entities to express their interest in the Broadband Satellite Resiliency Grant is now Sept. 30, NCDIT’s website states.

Eligible entities can signal their interest by completing the grant program’s Application and Certification Form, according to NCDIT.

According to NCDIT, eligible applicants include state agencies, community anchor institutions, volunteer fire departments, and local government units.

Applications are open statewide, but NCDIT stresses that entities within Helene’s federal disaster area will get preference.

North Carolina has 39 counties within the federal disaster area associated with Hurricane Helene, which dumped historic rains on the Appalachian Mountains, triggering massive floods in 2024.

As explained on the agency’s website, organizations cannot submit a group application and share the requested resources with other agencies and institutions.

“We need each entity to submit its own application for the program with specific contacts and other details to determine eligibility and prioritization for applicants within the 39 counties designated inside the Hurricane Helene federal disaster area,” NCDIT says in their FAQ section on the program’s webpage.

Within the federal disaster area, NCDIT says they’ll prioritize applications that directly provide emergency services, disaster relief, educational services, or local economic development.

Additionally, no portion of funds granted under the program shall be used for internet service subscriptions, NCDIT states.
