Connectivity while walking your dog is a stone’s throw away for members of the public who will soon be frequent visitors of Gatton Park on the Town Branch, a public park under construction in Kentucky’s second largest city.

Kinetic, an ISP operated by Windstream, this week announced the signing of a multi-year deal, which names the company as the park’s exclusive Wi-Fi provider.

The park, which will be 10 acres in size upon completion, will be located in downtown Lexington near the Rupp Arena, the home of the Kentucky Wildcats.

Gatton Park on the Town Branch’s executive director, Allison Lankford, said the deal, reportedly worth $1 million, would “power the entire park site with high-quality Wi-Fi.”

“We’re excited that one of the nation’s most affordable and reliable communications’ providers is partnering with us and making this significant investment,” Lankford said, according to Kinetic’s Aug. 15 release.

In the announcement, Kinetic detailed how connectivity would be provided to the park.

“Kinetic will install and sustain Wi-Fi gateways (modems/routers) throughout the park enabling free Wi-Fi availability throughout the 10-plus acres for the next decade,” the company’s announcement stated.

The park, expected to be finished next year, will feature a 4,500-capacity amphitheater, gardens, a dog park, a playground, a cafe, and other amenities.

“This infrastructure will help people connect and share experiences, whether they’re schoolchildren learning about ecology or festivalgoers or concertgoers enjoying performing arts and other cultural experiences,” Lankford said.

She said the deal would help Gatton Park attain its mission of becoming a “21st century community gathering space where people connect and share experiences.”
