Physical construction on the planned fiber corridor is set to break ground in Spring 2027, according to MWFN.

Regional connectivity is getting a massive long-haul boost in the Great Plains as Midwest Fiber Networks (MWFN), Midwest Fiberpath, and Hawkeye Land Co. team up to commercialize a planned 1,200-mile fiber corridor.

Monetizing Hawkeye’s exclusive rights along former Rock Island Railroad corridors, MWFN will act as the key commercial operator delivering conduit, dark fiber, and scalable lit services, MWFN announced Aug. 27.

Connecting Chicago, Omaha, Minneapolis, and Kansas City, the route addresses skyrocketing demand for bandwidth, regional route diversity, and low-latency network resilience. Meanwhile, for hyperscalers, data centers, enterprises, and wholesale carriers, the buildout provides a critical long-haul platform that bypasses traditional network chokepoints across the region.

With engineering and procurement already underway, physical construction is set to break ground in Spring 2027, MWFN’s release said.
