The latest Windstream network expansion is being hailed as a “significant integration” by the company and has brough two data centers in Alpharetta, Georgia on-net.

An announcement from Windstream Wholesale, the division of Windstream behind the project, said the expansion happened in collaboration with “major global financial solutions provider,” though the organization remained unnamed.

Windstream Wholesale’s announcement summarized the expansion’s pathways as an “innovative route” with design features that are custom made to cater to the needs of both data centers.

“Leveraging different paths for the two routes enhances the value proposition and positions Windstream Wholesale as a one-stop-shop for diverse multi-vendor route solutions,” said John Nishimoto, the SVP of strategy and marketing at Windstream Wholesale.

Nishimoto said Windstream invested necessary time to carefully planning the project with the customer, according to Windstream’s April 18 release.

The connected data centers, which belong to Ascent and Stack Data, are part of Windstream’s larger goals in the Atlanta metro area. The company’s announcement said the project has positioned Windstream to provide “diversity advantages to future customers in the thriving Atlanta market.”

“Ascent specializes in providing custom-built end-to-end solutions for data-intensive organizations, prioritizing safety, availability, and continuous innovation,” Windstream’s announcement stated. “Similarly, Stack focuses on meeting hyperscale demand, with data centers for efficiency, flexibility, and sustainability.”

Windstream has been busy in 2024.

In March, two Virginia fiber routes labeled as part of Windstream’s Nationwide Intelligent Converged Optical Network (ICON) enhanced their network capacities with FLEX DWDM (FLEX) technology to enable 400G wave service, managed spectrum service, and greater visibility into network health.

The month prior, in Feb., Windstream completed a 459-mile stretch of their underground “Beach Route” fiber cable, which runs from Raleigh, North Carolina to Savannah, Georgia.
