An upcoming webinar will share the use cases and benefits of fiber optic sensing tech for electric utilities.
By: Brad Randall, Broadband Communities
Members of the Fiber Optic Sensing Association’s outreach committee will outline the most common use cases for fiber-optic sensing technology and detail how applications of the technology can benefit the electric power industry.
Among the webinar’s presenters are Jon Beckman, the director of business operations for fiber and access solutions at VIAVI, and Dane Langen, the global segment lead for security and safety at Luna Innovations.
Paul Baird, technical market manager for all-dielectric self-support (ADSS) and industrial optical cables for Prysmian North America, will also be joining the webinar as a presenter.
Beckman, the vice chairman of the Fiber Optic Sensing Association (FOSA), is described as having over 20 years of experience in the telecommunications industry on FOSA’s website.
“Serving as chair of the FOSA Technology Outreach Committee, Jon has actively contributed to FOSA’s efforts to increase industry awareness of and appreciation for distributed fiber sensing technology,” Beckman’s biography stated.
This week, Paul Dickinson, chairman of FOSA, gave a sneak peek to some of the expected highlights of the webinar.
“Based on the importance of distributed fiber sensing technology to enhance life safety, monitor and optimize assets, and increase situational awareness for our electric infrastructure, I strongly encourage registering to understand the wide variety of use cases,” he said.
As previously reported by Broadband Communities, fiber-optic sensing provides telecom and utility operators the chance to proactively alert, identify, and address a situation before catastrophic failure. Use cases include damage prevention, security, situational awareness, operational insight, network mapping, traffic monitoring, and preventative maintenance.
Fiber-optic sensing technology has been used for decades in military applications and for perimeter and border security.
It then grew in popularity in monitoring pipelines for leaks and damage.
Registration for the webinar, planned for Sept. 19 at 11 a.m. Eastern time, is available here, at FOSA’s website.
