Amarillo, Texas has been named the newest ‘Certified Gigabit City’ by Vexus Fiber, which the company announced as representing a “major milestone” for both them and the city.
Vexus Fiber began rapidly expanding in Amarillo several years ago, in 2020. Since then, the broadband provider has expanded service to nearly 75,000 residents, the company said in an announcement.
The company, in their recent announcement about Amarillo’s new status as a Certified Gigabit City, said they’ve invested $64.5 million in the city and deployed more than 396 miles of fiber in Amarillo alone. Certification for Vexus’ gigabit city status is earned when a majority of households and business locations have access to the company’s fiber-optic internet speeds of at least 1 Gigabit, the company’s announcement said.
Andrew Freeman, the interim city manager for Amarillo, said his city takes pride in their newest designation from Vexus Fiber.
“As we continue to focus on the future of our city, the services offered by Vexus are crucial to achieving our goals,” he said, according to Vexus Fiber’s statement.
Along with the nearly 75,000 residents that have been connected, Vexus Fiber said they’ve connected more than 4,000 businesses in Amarillo.
Brian Borthwick, the director of operations for Vexus in Amarillo, said his company has grown with their expanded service offerings in Amarillo.
“It’s an exciting time at Vexus,” he said. “We are expanding the services available to our customers from multi-gig speeds to enhanced Total Home Wi-Fi capabilities along with high-powered solutions for businesses. We’re also growing as a company by adding additional local employees in every market we serve, including Amarillo.”
Vexus Fiber, which operates a brick-and-mortar location in the city at 2221 1-40 Frontage Rd., currently employs almost 60 team members in Amarillo, according to the company’s statement.
