Residents of a Utah community will be able to enjoy fiber-to-the-home service thanks to a recent project completion, an area provider announced.
UTOPIA Fiber, a community-owned fiber optic network that uses an open access model, has announced the completion of a nearly $6 million fiber-to-the-home network build in Cedar Hills, Utah.
UTOPIA, which is an acronym for the Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency, declared that Cedar Hills is now among 17 other cities that receive UTOPIA’s broadband services and said the project has connected 2,656 residential addresses in the community, according to UTOPIA’s Nov. 28 announcement.
Roger Timmerman, the CEO of UTOPIA Fiber, said the completion of the project marks a pivotal moment for UTOPIA Fiber.
“We are thrilled to expand our footprint in Utah County—all the while firmly maintaining our growth trajectory and commitment to bring more Utah residents ultra-high-speed and reliable broadband service,” he said, according to UTOPIA’s announcement.
Cedar Hills, a city in Utah County, is located 16 miles from Provo and 33 miles from Salt Lake City, according to the Cedar Hills municipal website. UTOPIA Fiber said the first homes were connected to their fiber-to-the-home network in August, with construction of the entire project being completed in September.
Denise Andersen, the mayor of Cedar Hills, said the move to fiber has been eagerly anticipated by the community. Her comments were included in UTOPIA Fiber’s announcement.
“Thanks to UTOPIA Fiber’s comprehensive network build-out, our residents can now enjoy access to fast and reliable internet connections that make work, school, and online everything easy and accessible,” she said. “We are thrilled with the reaction from our residents, and so happy to help move Cedar Hills into the digital future.”
UTOPIA Fiber said the Cedar Hills project, like all their projects since 2009, “has been funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue,” the organization’s announcement stated. “The completion of this project further extends UTOPIA Fiber’s reach, providing residents with access to speeds up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) and 100 Gbps for businesses, currently the fastest speeds offered in the United States.”
