A completed fiber-to-the-home project led by UTOPIA Fiber in Utah has resulted in over 6,600 residential addresses gaining access to UTOPIA’s network.
UTOPIA, which stands for the Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency, claims to be the nation’s largest open-access network.
The latest project, completed in the community of West Haven City, began connecting residents in April, according to UTOPIA’s Dec. 11 announcement.
It was funded entirely by revenue generated from subscribers, UTOPIA’s release stated.
Roger Timmerman, UTOPIA’s executive director, said the partnership with West Haven City is about futureproofing the community for generations to come.
Timmerman also said UTOPIA is “delivering the fastest and most reliable connectivity.”
“We’re empowering small businesses to thrive, attracting new opportunities, and ensuring West Haven remains competitive in a rapidly evolving digital economy,” he said in UTOPIA’s announcement.
Rob Vanderwood, the mayor of West Haven City, also offered comment in UTOPIA’s release.
“West Haven now enjoys the fastest speeds in the nation and more affordable pricing without compromising speed, reliability, or customer service,” Vanderwood said. “The future is truly bright for our community.”
In total, UTOPIA said the project cost roughly $17.6 million to complete. Work wrapped up in October, UTOPIA’s announcement stated.
