Republican Brendan Carr has been selected as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to serve as permanent chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Trump announced the nomination Sunday evening with a post on Truth Social, a social-media platform owned by Trump Media.
In the post, Trump called Carr “a warrior for free speech.”
Carr has served as a commissioner on the FCC since 2017.
He was first nominated to serve on the FCC during Trump’s first term.
In his Truth Social statement, Trump said Carr “has fought against the regulatory lawfare that has stifled Americans’ freedoms.”
Additionally, Trump said Carr would “ensure that the FCC delivers for rural America.”
Carr, the FCC’s senior Republican, has not previously served as chair.
Prior to being confirmed as a commissioner, Carr worked for former FCC Chair Ajit Pai as an advisor.
Currently, Democrat Jessica Rosenworcel serves as the FCC’s chair.
Carr recently made headlines when he voiced complaints about an appearance from Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live.
“NBC structured the SNL candidate appearance (just hours before an election) in a way that denies all other candidates their one-week procedural right,” Carr wrote on X days before the election.
Carr’s vision for the FCC
Following Trump’s election victory, Carr congratulated the former president. In his Nov. 7 congratulatory statement, Carr gave hints to his vision for the FCC.
“The American people have sent a clear and decisive message to Washington,” Carr stated. “It is time to change course.”
Carr said the FCC will play a key role “reining in big tech” and “ensuring that broadcasters operate in the public interest.”
Carr also said the FCC will attempt to support economic growth while advancing national security interests and supporting law enforcement.
“The FCC can and must deliver results for the American people,” Carr stated.
