UTOPIA Fiber has announced the completion of their fourth network build during 2023 in another Utah community.

Residents and businesses in Syracuse, Utah will now have access to high-speed broadband, according to UTOPIA Fiber, which recently announced the completion of a project to connect every home and business in the community.

UTOPIA Fiber’s network in Syracuse saw construction begin in November 2021 and the first homes were connected less than a year later, in September 2022, UTOPIA Fiber’s Dec. 7 announcement said.

The company said the citywide Syracuse fiber-to-the-home project has connected over 12,300 residential addresses and has yielded a subscriber rate of over 15 percent thus far.

Syracuse is described as “a vibrant Utah community of 30,000 residents who enjoy a high quality of life … located just north of Salt Lake City and is nestled between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake,” the city’s website stated.

Roger Timmerman, the CEO of UTOPIA Fiber, said the completion of the open-access network in Syracuse brings the community into alignment with surrounding localities, like Clearfield, Layton, and West Point.

“It’s not just about providing internet service; it’s about creating an equitable, competitive landscape,” he said. “Our open access model ensures that Syracuse residents and businesses have access to the same high-quality, diverse range of internet services as their neighbors, bridging the digital divide, and ensuring fair prices.”

UTOPIA, which is an acronym for the Utah Telecommunication Open Infrastructure Agency, declared that their Syracuse project—like all other UTOPIA Fiber projects—has been funded and grown solely through subscriber revenue. UTOPIA Fiber listed the overall price of the project at $23.5 million, according to their Dec. 7 announcement.

Shortly before announcing the completion of their Syracuse project, UTOPIA Fiber announced the completion of their $6 million Cedar Hills project. According to UTOPIA Fiber, that project connected 2,656 residential addresses in Cedar Hills.

UTOPIA Fiber said they provide fiber to 200,000 businesses and residences in over 50 communities, which makes them the largest open access network in the United States, according to a summary provided by UTOPIA Fiber.
