Surf Internet announced this week that its fiber-optic network now reaches 250,000 homes across Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. The news marks what the company described as its strongest construction year during its 25th anniversary.
The company attributed the growth to accelerated construction, strategic grant funding and partnerships with local communities. In addition, Surf highlighted a particular focus on rural towns and mid‑sized municipalities that previously lacked fiber infrastructure.
“Every new mile of fiber represents a community gaining access to opportunity, growth, and connection,” said founder and CEO Gene Crusie. “Delivering fiber‑optic internet to 250,000 homes isn’t just a milestone, it’s a transformation marker for the Great Lakes region.”
Surf also announced it added 90 employees this year across engineering, construction, customer care and field service roles.
“Reaching this milestone took disciplined work across our field teams, contractors, and local partners, especially in communities that had never had fiber infrastructure before,” said Surf’s COO, Brent Williams. “Their commitment is a big part of why we were able to deliver at this pace in 2025.”
The provider’s expansion landed Surf on Broadband Communities’ Top 100 list, recognition the company used to underscore its role in bringing broadband to underserved areas.
Looking ahead, Surf said it plans to accelerate construction in 2026. The company plans to use state and federal broadband grants, including future projects funded by the federal BEAD program, which is intended to subsidize broadband builds in areas lacking reliable internet.
