Indiana-based Surf Internet is celebrating their 25th anniversary by looking back at their humble origins and looking ahead.

Originally founded as MapleNet, Inc., a dial-up service provider, Surf Internet now includes a workforce of 300 employees and delivers fiber internet to over 600 communities.

The company reflected on their growth with a recent announcement, stating they remain focused on the future.

“In 2025, the company plans to expand its fiber-optic network to serve well over 250,000 homes and businesses, while aiming to grow its subscriber base to 75,000 customers,” the release stated.

As the announcement explained, Surf first launched fiber-optic services in 2019. The company rebranded to Surf Internet in 2022.

The company’s success has been bolstered by over $57 million in grant funding, according to Surf Internet.

Private equity investments from Bain Capital, Post Road Group, and a DigitalBridge Credit-led $200 million debt facility have also contributed to their success, the firm’s release stated.

This past year, Surf Internet was named in the 2024 Broadband Communities FTTH Top 100.

The ISP earned their status on the list due to efforts that have provided economic viability to rural communities across Illinois via advanced fiber-optic networks.

Customers in Indiana, and Michigan are also included among Surf Internet’s 50,000 customers.

‘Pioneering connectivity innovations’

Gene Crusie, the CEO of Surf Internet, said “Surf’s journey has been one of pioneering connectivity innovations” in the company’s Jan. 7 announcement.

“I am thankful for our team members, customers, and friends who have supported us over the past 25 years,” Crusie said. “Together, we have built something truly unique that is making a meaningful difference in the world.”

Kevin Bush, the firm’s CRO, also commented in Surf’s announcement.

“Each mile of fiber we install represents more than just infrastructure – it’s an opportunity for families to thrive, businesses to grow, and communities to flourish,” Bush said. “By partnering with local leaders and leveraging grants, private equity, and strategic investments, we’re not just building a network; we’re creating a stronger, more connected future.”
