A major investment is fueling fiber network construction in Peru, a north-central Indiana community.
Surf Internet, a Great Lakes region internet service provider (ISP), broke ground in Peru last month, Surf’s website stated.
A November release, published by Surf Internet, explained that the first phase of the project will go live this month.
In total, Surf expects to reach 4,275 residential and commercial properties in Peru.
The project is backed by an investment of over $5.5 million, according to Surf’s Nov. 27 announcement.
“With this investment, Surf is not only supporting today’s high-speed needs but also building a future-ready network that will continue to support the community as technology and internet demands evolve,” said Surf’s CEO, Gene Crusie.
Cruise’s comments, like the comments from Don Sturch, Peru’s mayor, were included with Surf’s release.
“Fiber internet access is essential for our community’s future,” the mayor stated. “Surf’s commitment to expanding connectivity in our town will benefit not only businesses and families today but also foster future growth and innovation in Peru.”
Construction, in total, is expected to be completed by the middle of 2026, according to Surf’s website.
“The network will launch with initial speeds of up to 2 gigabits-per-second with scalability built to support up to 10 Gigs, ensuring the infrastructure remains competitive and future-ready,” the ISP’s release stated.
During the project, Surf says they are working in tandem with Miami-Cass REMC, and their subsidiary: Broadway Broadband.
Miami-Cass REMC, described on their website as a not for profit, consumer-member owned utility, will assist Surf with their “local expertise and fiber network resources,” Surf’s announcement explained.
