A new status given to the city of Independence, Kansas by KWIKOM Communications means a majority of residences and businesses now have access to 1 Gigabit per second internet speeds.
KWIKOM Communications, based in Iola, called the news a significant achievement for Independence.
According to KWIKOM’s Nov. 19 announcement, the development will promote economic growth and put Independence on the forefront of digital innovation.
“This enhanced service will bring immeasurable value to our citizens, our businesses, our educators and students,” said Independence Mayor Tim Emert, who accepted KWIKOM’s Gigabit City Certification award on behalf of the community.
Emert’s comments were included in KWIKOM’s announcement. He said Independence’s new status as a Gigabit City will give the community a competitive advantage.
The city, located in the southeast part of the state, had a population of just over 8,500 in the 2020 U.S. Census.
‘A true milestone’
“Improved internet capabilities in our community with the addition of a citywide fiber network is a true milestone for Independence,” he said.
KWIKOM’s release explained how being a Gigabit City can have a meaningful impact on the quality of life.
“Local educational institutions can now better facilitate online learning, research opportunities, and digital collaboration for students and faculty,” KWIKOM’s release stated. “Healthcare providers will be able to offer enhanced telehealth and telemedicine services.”
KWIKOM’s announcement continued, saying the improved connectivity could prove pivotal when it comes to attracting new residents to Independence.
“This is a huge step forward, not just for Independence, but for Kansas as a whole,” said Mike Brigman, the CEO of KWIKOM’s parent company WANRack LLC. “We’re committed to expanding our network to ensure even more cities across the state benefit from faster, more reliable internet, empowering residents to thrive in work, school, and leisure.”
According to Brigman, the advancement in Independence represents what’s possible for the state.
“The future of Kansas is gigabit-fast, and we’re just getting started.”
