Communities in the Birmingham metro area will soon have a new fiber-optic internet provider on the block.

The news broke this week when Lumos Fiber, a provider that serves customers across Virginia and the Carolinas, announced plans to lay 1,300 miles of fiber to reach “underserved communities and families throughout the Birmingham Metro.”

According to Lumos, the expansion will be the first time some households and businesses within the Birmingham market gain access to fiber internet.

Construction will begin soon on the network, with engineering work already underway, the ISP announced.

Among communities that Lumos listed as in line for fiber-optic connectivity were Birmingham, Irondale, Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, and Hoover. Jefferson County was also mentioned in the release posted on Lumos’ website.

The announcement from Lumos was welcomed news for Hoover Mayor Frank Brocato, who’s comments were included in the ISP’s announcement.

“We are always in favor of our residents having more options when it comes to internet providers, making Hoover a more connected city,” Brocato said.

Additionally, the expansion effort will bring “valuable job opportunities to Jefferson County,” the announcement stated.

The announcement makes Alabama the sixth state where Lumos currently has a presence.

In addition to Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, the provider has also recently announced expansions in Kentucky, Ohio, and Illinois.

Brian Stading, the CEO of Lumos Fiber, also commented on the news in the ISP’s announcement.

He said the ISP’s goal is to create a lasting impact in Alabama.

“Fiber optic infrastructure isn’t just about internet speeds,” Stading said. “It’s about enabling opportunities for telemedicine, remote working, learning, and smart city innovation.”
