A new $8 million investment into high-speed broadband in two North Carolina counties marks a major milestone for the state, according to Kinetic, a Windstream company.

The project, a North Carolina Completing Access to Broadband project, is funded from a variety of sources, Kinetic’s release last week stated.

In Stanly County, where 78 miles of fiber will extend access to 900 locations, over $900,000 of the project’s cost is being financed by Kinetic.

An additional $1.1 million from the county, and $1.1 million from the North Carolina Department of Information Technology (NCDIT), will also finance the work.

Meanwhile, in Cabarrus County, Kinetic is investing $1.5 million.

Work in Cabarrus County, according to Kinetic, will see placement of 95 miles of new fiber.

Additional funding for the work in Cabarrus County also comes from the county, $1.5 million, and NCDIT, which contributed $1.75 million.

According to Kinetic, once work is complete, the Cabarrus County project will provide access to over 1,000 locations.

Sarah Hardin, the VP of government affairs for Kinetic’s Southeast region, said the project will help county residents prepare for the future.

“This initiative not only enhances our educational resources but also opens new opportunities for innovation and learning,” Hardin said. “We’re thrilled to support this transformative project.”

According to Kinetic, the work in both counties will see a completion by the end of 2026.
