LOS ANGELES — Huawei, a global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced the successful demonstration of the industry’s first full services point-to-point wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (PtP WDM-PON) system that is part of the Next Generation PON2 (NG PON2) architecture. The new WDM-PON system supports both PtP GE/10GE and wireless fronthaul services.

Different from traditional time-division multiplexing passive optical network (TDM-PON), the WDM-PON system establishes a lambda-based point-to-point connection via colorless dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technologies, providing dedicated wavelength channels to: wireless remote radio unit (RRU) nodes with fronthaul service, enterprises with GE or 10GE private lines service, residential subscribers with GE service, or Fiber To The Curb (FTTC)/Fiber To The Building (FTTB)/Fiber To the drop-point (FTTdp) with GE backhaul.

Huawei has adopted two innovative technologies with the WDM-PON system:

  • Colorless laser technology called Automatic Wavelength Locking, which cost-effectively and efficiently solves the service provisioning and module inventory issues that occur when applying conventional DWDM fixed wavelength modules in access networks.
  • With quad small form-factor pluggable (QSFP)-like high-density integration and packaging technologies, the port density of the WDM-PON optical line terminal (OLT) line card is increased to accommodate both DWDM Mux/Demux and up to 32×10 Gbps optical transceivers. DWDM Mux/Demux inbuilt on OLT line card also enables the whole system to be much more compact, easily installed and maintained.

Developed using Huawei’s new generation GPON/XG-PON/TWDM-PON OLT platform MA5800, the WDM-PON system is designed to flexibly support both private GE/10GE service and wireless fronthaul service, such as common public radio interface (CPRI), without touching the hardware and platform; while both services have the same high requirement on security and reliability, wireless fronthaul services have much stricter requirements on the delay and jitter than private GE/10GE service. Operators can also achieve full services – including residential broadband service, private line and wireless backhaul or fronthaul – by a uniform optical access network and platform.

Huawei Completes Field Trials and 4G LTE Integration Testing
Based on the innovative WDM PON solution, Huawei and operators have jointly completed two PtP GE private line field trials and two 4G LTE fronthaul lab tests. In February 2015, Huawei and a Chinese operator jointly completed the industry’s first WDM-PON & XG-PON hybrid network field trial. In the hybrid network, WDM-PON and XG-PON coexist in the same optical distribution network (ODN) to satisfy diversified users’ needs. Specifically, PtP WDM-PON provides a PtP GE-like private service for high-end enterprise users through a dedicated wavelength while XG-PON provides private line services for SMBs and broadband services for residential subscribers. In another PtP GE private line field trial with another Chinese operator, the WDM PON system is deployed to serve SMBs in an industrial park.

Earlier in October and November 2014, Huawei and operators jointly completed PtP WDM PON fronthaul lab tests in 4G LTE network, and tested services in 4G smart phones and data cards including HD VoD, FTP, and other 4G applications. The achieved 4G LTE service performance is the same as using PtP fiber direct connections, demonstrating the feasibility of using WDM-PON for wireless fronthaul services.
