Lumos has announced it is beginning construction on a 100 percent fiber-optic network in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Less than a year after announcing a major investment in the area, fiber-provider Lumos is prepared to celebrate the beginning of network construction in Wilmington, North Carolina.

According to a Feb. 12 release from the company, a permitting process that will allow Lumos to build in rights-of-way is ongoing. Lumos CEO Brian Standing said the arrival of his company’s high-speed broadband in Wilmington is timely.

“Wilmington is growing exponentially, and its economy is booming,” Standing was quoted as having said in the announcement from Lumos. “The city needs access to ultra-fast and reliable internet to support the growth.”

In April 2023, the company announced an investment, totaling $56 million, to construct 655 miles of fiber in portions of Wilmington and Carolina Beach, according to Lumos. The expansion efforts will also bring fiber-optic broadband to Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Castle Hayne, and Wrightsboro, Lumos has stated.

In their release, Lumos said they are the first fiber provider for much of the area.

Comments from Natalie English, the president and CEO of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, were included in the announcement from Lumos.

“With Lumos Fiber’s investment in optical fiber, Wilmington can confidently step into a new digitally empowered era,” she said. “In a world where speed is paramount, our community wholeheartedly embraces this leap forward, understanding that superfast broadband is about empowering our workforce, nurturing innovation, and fostering a vibrant, connected community.”

When the construction efforts in Wilmington are completed, the city’s customers will join 300,000 homes and businesses across North Carolina, Virginia, and South Carolina served by Lumos’ internet services.
