Fiber internet provider Lumos has announced a $246 million investment to fuel expansion efforts in two Illinois counties.
The counties selected for Lumos’ expansion, DuPage and Cook counties, are both located in Chicago’s metro area.
“We are proud to bring critical infrastructure improvement to the area as the first fiber provider for these communities and anticipate more growth for Lumos throughout the state and region,” said Lumos CEO Brian Stading.
Stading offered comment included in the announcement from Lumos, released Tuesday.
Currently, Lumos serves residents and businesses in areas across Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ohio, a summary of Lumos’ operations stated.
The company also reports to have 425,000 locations across their footprint.
Grace Simrall, the director of market development at Lumos, said the expansion will benefit unserved and underserved areas.
Simrall also said the efforts would bolster economic growth and impact both counties positively for generations to come.
In addition to fiber internet, Lumos’ release said their expansion effort will bring jobs to Illinois.
The internet service provider (ISP), headquartered in Virginia and North Carolina, explained that engineering work for the expansion is underway.
