The CTO of Boingo Wireless has been named chairman of the board of directors for the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA).

The appointment of Dr. Derek Peterson, who serves as Boingo’s CTO, was accompanied by information that Cameron Dunn, the assistant vice president for In Building Solutions at AT&T, will serve as the board’s co-chair.

As the WBA’s release explained, “Dr. Peterson has been an active and influential WBA board member since 2012, serving as co-chair before becoming acting chair in July 2025.”

Serving as chairman, he’ll now draw on his wireless expertise to lead the board, the WBA’s release stated.

As CTO at Boingo, Dr. Peterson leads the company’s technical strategy and innovation, pioneering the adoption and deployment of next-generation wireless technologies including 5G, Passpoint, CBRS private networks and Wi-Fi 7,” the release said.

Additionally, the announcement said Dunn brings over 25 years of experience to the board of directors.

Throughout (Dunn’s) career in mobile telecommunications, he has demonstrated a comprehensive end-to-end vision, successfully driving initiatives from concept to execution in the mobility space,” the release stated.

‘A driving force’

Tiago Rodrigues, the WBA’s president and CEO, also commented on the appointments.

Dr. Peterson has been a driving force in shaping the WBA’s strategy and advancing the Wi-Fi industry over the past decade,” Rodrigues said. “His leadership, vision, and technical expertise have been instrumental in strengthening collaboration across our global ecosystem.”

The WBA, founded in 2003, has a global mission of bringing together industry leaders to collaborate and propel the development, integration, and adoption of next-gen Wi-Fi. Wireless tech also remains a main area of interest for the WBA.

NextGen Wi-Fi, OpenRoaming, 5G, 6G, IoT, smart cities, testing and interoperability, along with policy and also regulatory affairs remain key areas of focus for the WBA, a summary of the organization stated.
