After securing an anchor tenant, a Michigan-based dark fiber provider has announced commencement of a new dark fiber route in the Phoenix area that will run through nine cities in the quickly-growing metro area.
Light Source Communications, a carrier neutral, network owner-operator, is beginning work on a 140-mile-long dark fiber route in the Phoenix metro area after securing a partnership with “a major global hyperscaler as the anchor tenant.”
The company announced the news with a March 13 release and stated that, once complete, the network will reach nine cities and several data centers in the metro area.
Debra Freitas, the CEO of Light Source Communications, called the route “vital” in comments included with Light Source Communications’ announcement.
“Phoenix embraces the growth of data centers and connectivity, and it is quickly becoming a premier destination for hyperscalers,” Freitas said. ““Artificial intelligence, machine learning, internet of things (IoT) and other emerging technologies require connections with high levels of capacity and reliability.”
The route, which will be constructed entirely underground, will both help meet the needs of hyperscalers and provide scalable connectivity to enterprise customers in the area, according to Freitas.
During construction of the route, Freitas will be partnering with Future Infrastructure LLC, an engineering, procurement, and construction firm that is a division of contracting company Primoris Services Corporation, Light Source’s announcement stated.
Primoris is described as a company that delivers a range of specialty construction services, including critical infrastructure solutions, program management, engineering, fabrication, replacement, and maintenance, according to a summary of the company’s activities.
Scott Comley, the president of Primoris’ communications business, said his company is excited to partner with Light Source Communications on the project, which Comley called “impactful.”
“Our commitment to innovation and excellence is well-aligned with Light Source’s cutting-edge solutions and we look forward to delivering with quality and safety at the forefront,” he was quoted as having said in Light Source’s announcement.
Light Source’s release further announced that engineering is currently underway for the dark fiber route and predicted that construction would begin in the third quarter of this year.
The route, which Light Source said would circle Arizona State University at Tempe and the University of Arizona, is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
