Cumberland Connect, the broadband subsidiary of Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation, joined the City of Portland and Sumner County Government in Tennessee earlier this month to unveil free public Wi-Fi at Meadowbrook Park and along Main Street during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 1:30 p.m.
The initiative was funded through a Broadband Ready Communities grant from the Tennessee Department of Economic & Community Development and delivered by Cumberland Connect.
Community members, local leaders, and project partners attended the Meadowbrook Park event, which featured opening remarks and a live demonstration of the new Wi-Fi service. The program concluded on Main Street with a signal check and a community photo marking the official launch.
“This investment in public Wi-Fi represents an important step toward greater digital inclusion in our community,” said CEMC General Manager Chris A. Davis. “Reliable internet access is essential for residents, visitors, and businesses alike, and we are grateful for the collaboration that made this project possible.”
In addition to expanding internet access, the project included a digital literacy training initiative for Portland residents. In partnership with the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, Sumner County provided resources and instruction to help community members develop the digital skills needed to thrive.
