A network expansion funded by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds has been completed by Comcast in Greenwood, South Carolina.

The network’s launch, celebrated last week in Greenwood, was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony a community block party, according to Comcast.

Also celebrating the event was a generous donation from Comcast, which amounted to $10,000 to support digital literacy classes at the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakeland Region. Dozens of students, 50 in total, were also gifted free laptops as part of Comcast’s Project UP, the company’s release stated.

In addition, the Boys & Girls Club of the Lakeland Region will launch “Lift Zone,” which will provide free Wi-Fi to young people at the club.

Quotes from Jim Stritzinger, the director of South Carolina’s statewide broadband office, were included in Comcast’s release.

“Expanding broadband access in South Carolina is critical for supporting education, business growth and community development,” he said. “We are excited about the advancements in connectivity to Greenwood, enabling more residents and businesses to thrive in the digital age.”

Mike McArdle, a regional SVP for Comcast, also celebrated the news.

“As we bring new services to Greenwood, we are proud to invest in the community’s digital future,” McArdle said, according to Comcast’s announcement. “From reliable broadband access to Lift Zones and laptop donations, our goal is to create meaningful opportunities that empower families and businesses.”

In total, Comcast says they have invested $1.3 million through in-kind donations to South Carolina non-profits.

The donations, all within the past three years, are part of the company’s commitment to boosting digital skills for South Carolina residents, according to Comcast.
