Brendan Carr, the chairman of the FCC, has taken action to end the FCC’s diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) directives following an executive order issued by President Donald Trump.
The announcement follows the events of Monday, when Trump signed an executive order titled “Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferencing.”
According to the FCC, Carr has already taken action pursuant with Trump’s executive order by “ending the FCC’s promotion of DEI.”
Carr’s statement, included with the FCC’s announcement, said “promoting invidious forms of discrimination runs contrary to the Communications Act and deprives Americans of their rights to fair and equal treatment under the law.”
“It also represents a wasteful expenditure of taxpayer resources,” Carr’s statement read.
With the Tuesday announcement, Carr confirmed that he’s ending a slew of initiatives at the FCC.
“Promoting DEI will no longer be any part of the FCC’s strategic plans going forward,” Carr’s statement read.
Steps listed as being taken by Carr to comply with Trump’s executive order included rescinding the FCC’s Equity Action Plan, created in 2022, and eliminating the FCC’s DEI Advisory Group.
Carr also said he will eliminate DEI from the FCC’s directives to advisory committees and announced the elimination of a relevant task force.
According to Carr, additional steps may follow to comply with Trump’s executive order, “including consulting and coordinating with other agencies,” Carr’s statement read.
