A disconnection notice has been sent to Accelecom customers in Kentucky following the state’s cancellation of their contract in January.

The Kentucky Communications Network Authority (KCNA) has begun mailing disconnection notices to Accelecom customers in compliance with a recent court order.

The order, issued by the Franklin Circuit Court, stems from ongoing litigation in Kentucky involving Accelecom, a fiber-internet provider.

Accelecom had been contracted to oversee the expansion of access across the entirety of the state, according to a statement published on the KentuckyWired website.

“On January 22, 2025, KCNA terminated Accelecom’s contract due to its failure to meet its contractual obligations,” the statement read.

According to the statement, KCNA was then ordered “to give at least 30-days advanced notice to all of Accelecom’s customers that the contract termination will ultimately result in KCNA disconnecting Accelecom from the KentuckyWired network.”

The KentuckyWired network was designed to provide high-speed access to Kentucky’s government agencies.

However, the network was built with additional capacity to serve rural areas, KCNA’s statement explained.

‘Your broadband service may be impacted’

The disconnection notice, also published on the KentuckyWired website, informs Accelecom customers that the company no longer has rights to use the KentuckyWired middle-mile network.

“Your broadband service may be impacted by this termination and disconnection,” the notice reads. “You are receiving this notice from the Commonwealth so that the Commonwealth and its operations company can provide you assistance.”

The notice also encourages Accelecom customers to reach out to KCNA’s Executive Director via email.

Customers are additionally instructed to reach out to Accelecom agents, to ensure continuity of services.

According to published reports, the contract cancellation could result in thousands of residents losing access in the weeks ahead.

StateScoop has further reported that disconnection notices began to be received by customers in mid-April.

When notices were sent out, KCNA told customers they would “not take any action regarding any customer of Accelecom that is using the KentuckyWired network within the next 30 days.”

“KCNA acknowledges the concerns of Accelecom’s customers and stands ready to work with Accelecom and its customers to provide as much time as possible to consider all available service options,” KCNA’s statement read. “KCNA will provide more information as it becomes available.”
